Looking after your bike properly — Part 2

We’re back, we’re back James b***h! This time it’s the second part of our thoughts and opinions on bicycle maintenance, and who knows — there could be a third part. Read Part 1 here if you haven’t already.

Cycling Accessories

The first part of this series, we talked about how cycling accessories can help you to maintain your bicycle both in terms of looks and performance, and we’re going to go into a bit more detail here.

We want to discuss cycling accessories as they are important for all of the stuff you can put on your bicycle.

The first bicycle accessory that we feel helps you to look after your bicycle is a turbo trainer.

A turbo trainer for your bicycle is there so you don’t have to go out in the depths of winter when it’s wet, windy and mucky — all perfect things to either crash your bicycle and damage it or just to get your bike filthy and have a really tough time cleaning it.

A turbo trainer means that you can train consistently, keep your bike clean and not have to worry about the weather outside that might cause a bike crash.

Let’s move to the next section to see what goes really well with your turbo trainer and helps you to keep your costs down on bicycle tyres over the winter season.

Turbo Trainer Tyres

Every bicycle requires tyres. They keep you upright with their grip and keep you moving fast when they’re inflated, un-punctured, and have a good rolling resistance.

However, a road bicycle tyre is a lot different to an indoor bicycle tyre. While we have a great selection of bicycle tyres, it’s important to keep the right one on your bike at all times.

So in this instance where we are recommending a turbo trainer to ease the bike maintenance load in winter, we also want to help you keep the bicycle tyre budget low.

If you keep putting regular tyres on your bicycle when on the turbo trainer, you’re going to use them a lot quicker. So in our tyres section, take a look at the turbo trainer tyres that are heavier duty and last much longer on your turbo trainer than a regular road bicycle tyre.

All the money you save on tyres can be spent on bicycle components upgrades and regular bicycle maintenance.

Cycling Clothing

The last section we’re going to discuss on good bicycle maintenance is actually cycling clothing.

A lot of spending isn’t required on cycling clothing, but keeping a good set of cycling clothes and having a good routine for cleaning them will help you to keep a similar routine for bicycle maintenance.

By taking pride in your cycling clothing, you should automatically take pride in your bicycles performance. This idea, coupled with an understanding of your bike will make sure that you spot every problem and know how to get it back to perfect working order.

One way of looking at it is that cycling clothing will last for a period of time, and that period of time will be longer if you care for it. Then when you start to see problems, like a chamois’ stitching coming loose, then it’s just like with a bike — when you notice something is wrong, you will fix it or replace it because you want things working well.

Part 2 should hopefully have given you another insight into how we think about bicycle maintenance, and if any of this has reminded you of anything you need, then our online bicycle shop will likely have all of the cycling essentials that you need for your love of cycling.
